The KWOTA Standard was established in September 2022. Originally it was designed and managed by KWOTA OÜ.
In July 2024, the KWOTA Standard was handed over to a non-profit organisation MTÜ KWOTA Carbon Standard (Registry No 80642936) to manage and develop it independently and credibly.

MTÜ KWOTA Carbon Standard is a non-profit organisation whose mission is to accelerate material reuse and circular economy, thus building capacity for climate change mitigation, adaptation and leveraging the power of environmental markets.
The aim of MTÜ KWOTA Carbon Standard is to globally promote the recycling of materials with the support of a reliable and transparent voluntary carbon market measure, including managing and developing the KWOTA Standard.
The General Assembly sets the strategic vision and oversees the functioning of MTÜ KWOTA Carbon Standard by selecting the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors has the competence of organising daily activities, keeping records, preparing action plans and budgets, preparing of the financial year report and organising MTÜ KWOTA Carbon Standard accounting.
The General Assembly also has the right and responsibility to convene additional independent advisory boards and technical committees to guide and support the specific work related to the governance of the KWOTA Standard.
